My Kind of Fairytale

November24

I loved Enchanted. I predicted almost every major plot point from just the poster and the knowledge that it was going to be a parody of sorts, but I enjoyed it anyway because it was fun, campy, funny and waffy. As a kid who grew up watching Disney films on an almost daily basis, I loved the references made throughout the movie.

Disney has long been criticized for their passive princesses with their waiting-for-my-prince-to-come bullshit mentality. Although the female leads have been improving (Belle, Megara, Mulan, etc), this I think is the first time Disney has directly addressed the criticisms. Enchanted redeemed Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, the worst princesses, through Giselle and established that naivety and the propensity to burst into song are not mutually exclusive with empowerment. Though the way Giselle did it was kind of trite, Disney gets points for the effort.

The upcoming movie featuring a black princess is further proof of Disney’s evolution. I wonder though, how many more years would it take for them to lose the homophobia?

Anyway, I felt like drawing myself Disney style (vainvainvain). But what I came up with wasn’t very Disney-ish at all. And it looked like me as much as Idina Menzel looked like her Disney self, which is not by a long shot. Marami ring mali, but whatever, sayang naman sa effort so I’ll post it anyway:

The movie I’m REALLY excited about is the adaptation of The Kite Runner. I will watch it come finals or high water.

Hey it’s a nice drawing :) I’m happy you didn’t put major spoilers of Enchanted into this post, coz I’m planning to watch it tomorrow. Hehe. I also grew up watching Disney flicks so I’m excited for this one.

I can’t wait for that Disney movie with a black princess as well! (Finally).

Black princess? Cool. Can’t wait for that.

Hmmm. The drawing’s nice, even though you didn’t pull of the Disney style you want to accomplish. Did you draw this in freehand or digitally?

At the time I saw the Enchanted ad, I thought it’s going to include all the Disney princesses and jam packed with an unusual storyline. I guess I’m wrong. Lol.

The drawing is not that bad. I like it. :P

Juice> thanks. Enjoy the movie :)

Dan> I drew it in my sketchpad then I scanned it and colored it in photoshop

    Laarni> ty :)

I thought Disney was ok with the homosexual community and even approved of gay marriage. Well I guess it will take a while before they put it on the big screen.
I heard Kite Runner will be good but the kids who were in the movie are in danger because of the rape scene and that’s considered taboo even though it’s just a movie.

Your question on my site: well they never really answered what Sam was. Everyone was confused. Even older Dom from 2007 was still confused. All we know that Sam was comfortable wearing boys clothes, didn’t like girls (so that means she wasn’t lesbian) and liked her friend Dom who was a boy. All your comments made sense with the ftm transgendered teen who also happened to be a homosexual thing but the show kept hinting the whole rebellious young person who wouldn’t follow traditional gender roles also.

I might show the entire episode in streaming form on my site.

Ah yeah, they allow gay marriages in their parks. But they have yet to translate that openness to their films.

I guess I’ll have to watch the episode to get a better idea.

WTB more singing animals. @_@ :S

i hope they extend the range of their subjects to adult themed stories, animation should not be pegged to children’s movies. it’s a very effective, evocative medium. look at what the Japanese have been releasing for decades.

    nice drawing!

Oooh, interesting. :D Laking Disney ka pala. Ako, hindi ako sigurado kung laging Magnolia Chocolate ako eh. Nyehehe.

Pero hindi ko alam kumbakit hindi ako masyadong na-attached sa Disney. Siguro kasi wala akong pagkakataon dati.

levin3d> I agree. Naalala ko pa nung hs kami, talagang pinaglalaban namin na di lang pambata ang animation.

napakalayo ko pa sa level ng drawing pawaa mo, kaya I appreciate that you found my drawing nice.salamat :)

jake> laking magnolia chocolait din ako ^^

I’m also looking forward for the movie version of “The Kite Runner.” It’s the best book I’ve read so far this year. Maganda rin yung isa pang book ni Khaled Hosseini.

Surprisingly, I haven’t even thought of watching Enchanted. Upon reading this, well, I might consider giving it a shot.

The drawing’s nice, really. :) And thanks for the visit, BTW.

Christian> I love both books :) Mas emotional ang Kite Runner, but I like A Thousand Splendid Suns just a little bit more

Arlo> I wasn’t planning on watching it din e, but the reviews were pretty good..di ko naman pinagsisihan :)

I enjoyed The Kite Runner. Incidentally, I’m currently reading A Thousand Splendid Suns which I find a lot more… splendid than TKR.

Disney overcoming homophobia? Not likely… 50+ years. I can just see conservative America waving their “Hedonistic Sinners! Burn!” signs at the “Ban Disney” rally.

Although, one can argue that the Seven Dwarves are in fact… very gay. So is Prince Charming… Come on, prancing around in those tight leggings? :p

Your drawing of yourself looks great. Did you give yourself bigger boobs? I always find myself accentuating my boobs in my drawings. Now, THAT’S vanity. :p

    No need. They’re naturally big. lol ^^;;

Nice drawing! you’re pretty good :D A disney and manga mix look and feel. Now I understand why you wanted to take up fine arts.

If my schedule permits, I’ll watch this film … Grew up with disney too. I’m not much into the princesses movies (except Beauty and the beast), but I love their villains! Specially Maleficent!

My favorites are The Sword in the stone, Mr. Toad and Ichabod Crane.

neat-o. love the lips on that drawing.

i never really got attached to Disney’s musketeers, namely Mickey Rat, Donald AngerManagement, and Goofy Whateverheis. but they have nice soundtracs in their movies most of the time. *ballroom scene from Beauty&the Beast runs in head*

Tapsi> ah the comment was cut because of the “<”

Kris> yeah, parang may attachment nga tayo sa Disney, maybe even a bit more so than the previous and this generation of kids
