Escapism

May4

This rock was a hit with my family cause it looks like it’s flipping you off. We picked it up on the beach on the second day of our family/mini-baranggay outing in Subic. I know it looks like something else. But I didn’t point it out ’cause I was with my very young cousins.

The first day was an epic waste of time. And on our last day, my newly retired grandfather decided to give us a “tour” of the place. We went around in circles with the highlights being:

“This is where my office was (abandoned building).”
“This is where we ate breakfast/lunch/dinner/merienda.”
“I frequented this casino (repeat several times).”
“I bought canned goods here.”

And from my uncle: “This is where I parked and slept while waiting for him.”

Fun times.

It wasn’t all bad though. The 3 hour (11am-2pm=sunburn!) swim was fun. And I got my tong-its game back. But one of the best things I did was hang-out on the swings with my sister and tita. We were discussing our future (lalim, pare).

My sis is graduating this year and my tita is an incoming nursing junior. What we all have in common is our desire for independence. We all recognize our family’s inability to let go off their offsprings. My tita calls it ‘close family ties’, I want to call it emotionally unhealthy. So far, the only proven effective ways to move out has been through marriage and/or rebellion, none of which works for me. I plan to move out without marrying anyone or becoming a bigger black sheep than I already am. I will leave the country for independence.

Escape Plan:

  • Third year in med school
  • Clerkship/Junior Internship
  • Internship + Phil Board Exams
  • USMLE
  • Residency in the US
  • Practice for a year or two or come back immediately
  • Take up Multimedia Arts.

My sis is choosing between getting a job or taking up a second course (Advertising/HRM/Culinary Arts/a fashion related course) or taking up a masters degree. But she is ardent about running her own hotel someday. My aunt also has plans to go abroad. We might even leave on the same year. When we come back, we all considered moving in together.

Anyway, as Shari’s multiply site says, one shot at a time. The first thing on the list starts in two weeks but the most urgent thing at hand is a trip to the beach with my friends. More sunburn, overlapping tan lines and hopefully more than 3 hours of fun.

The first time I saw it I actually thought it was a blurred out far away hand flipping me off!

Demmit, I WANNA GO TO THE BEACH. I hate you :P

Don’t like to be really vulgar here but at first I thought that was picture of a mini erected penis. 0_0.

It’s a sad ting that many Filipinos, the older generation in particular, don’t have a good impression on independence, noh? Parang it automatically suggests that you’re leaving your family, which is not likely at all. Masyadong ‘commanding’ kasi ang dating ng maraming Filipino families kahit wala nang sense. Kung hihingi sila sa yo ng pera at di mo pinagbigyan, halos itakwil ka na. =(

BTW, where in US are you planning to move? I’m flying to CA in a coupe of mos. Idf you move there, I think you’ll get a job easily. They’re short of med staff in the US(according to my mom).

Well, yeah, it really looks lie something else. Lol.

Beach! Even though I’m not a fan of beaches, I wanna visit one right now… so I can forget my school-related problems even just for a few hours.

    isn’t the beach great? :)

i totally relate with the problem of the Pinoy culture’s over-involved family ties - yet another reason why i’ve decided to take a breather for a while in a foreign country.

multimedia arts sounds like a plan. mine will more likely be creative writing.

Kung magkakaroon ako ng anting-anting, ganyang bato ang gusto kong hitsura.

Meron din akong sariling escape plan for independence. Medyo mahirap-hirap lang because of some factors (undergrad, this, that…) Nagsisimula na ako ngayon, bilang isang “corporate slave.” :D

It was 2 years ago when I get to the beach last time. Not really a fan of those places for I don’t want to turn my skin color into charcoal. Haha. But I love its environment - refreshing to look at at photograph-worthy.

Whenever I think of something I wanted to do, I make sure that it’s REALLY worth doing. And yeah, I do things one step at a time. Slowly and methodically. Lol.

The process of completely moving out seems to be a never-ending process. Even if you’ve managed to worm your way out the first time, parents have their crafty ways of luring you back home.

The rock… precious! Yeah, I saw the other shape… Imagine, you could sell that on eBay, hehe.

The plan… sounds solid. I hope it all comes true for you. I had plans too, but then I veered off a little… when life beat all the optimism and dreams out of me… OK, I’m kidding. Mostly. Sort of.

Don’t give up on the arts thing (even if it’s just a hobby).
